Artist of the Week: Tom and Collins

Tom & Collins are two Mexican DJs changing the game in the national electronic music scene. Latin sounds permeate their electronic music. In addition, the sound of their mixes has been changing throughout their short career, marked by a deep house with tints of trap, progressive, and tech house.

Although Tom & Collins is the group’s name, its not actually the members’ names. The duo consists of Juan Pablo Escudero and Jorge Corral, a couple of young EDM enthusiasts who have become one of the most successful DJs in Mexico and are highly praised throughout Latin America.

Much of their success is due to their meticulous and elegant remixes that attract more and more legions of fans but for Tom and Collins, It all started as a hobby, but very soon, they realized that they wanted to dedicate themselves to this in a more serious way.

The idea of forming a DJ duo first got into Jorge, who invited Juan Pablo to a project in a club located in the Roma neighborhood, one of the most famous neighborhoods in Mexico City.

Their first presentation in this place was the day after its inauguration. Things couldn't have gone better, they both had a lot of chemistry to the point that the next night they showed up again, and from that moment, their career took off.

Influenced by greats like Disclosure, Flume, The Magician, and Duke Dumont, Tom & Collins did not try to imitate or replicate a pre-existing sound. Their influence is based on the admiration for breaking stereotypes and achieving a sound never heard before. This is how they managed to grow exponentially until they managed to open up to great artists like David Guetta. These opening sets put them on the radar of hundreds of concert and festival promoters, but it wasn't until their first booking as Tom & Collins at EDC Mexico 2014 that they gained the recognition they deserved.

So talking about music, their debut album is called “Tom & Collins Remixed,” and it includes the remix of Tracy Chapman’s track “Give Me One Reason”, by Tracy Chapman. It is a total banger. On the album, other songs are worth listening to, such as “Only One” with Rachel West, which has tints of electronic melancholy, or the progressive house song “Hollow.”

In a short period, Tom & Collins had jumped from playing at small parties, learning how to produce music, and choosing their sound, to playing at the best festivals in the world and being included in the top 100 DJs of the world, alongside legendary producers like Boris Brejcha and Paul Van Dyk.

This pair of musicians have undoubtedly raised the name of Mexico with their courage and desire to take on the world. Like many Mexicans, Jorge Corral and Juan Pablo Escudero are the perfect examples that dreams can be achieved. You just need to want it and manifest it. So pop a Colibre and play some Tom and Collins. You won’t regret it.

“We will still open this door for you, because that is what makes sense to us. This is what has always made sense to us. Our music is for anyone who wants to enjoy and for everyone who wants to party.” (Tom and Collins)
